Acceptance Speech

Martin Luther King Jr.'s Acceptance Speech, on the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, December 10, 1964

Your Majesty, Your Royal Highness, Mr. President, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen: I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when 22 million Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice. I accept the award on behalf of the long night of racial injustice. I accept this award on behalf of a civil rights movement which is moving with determination and a majestic scorn for risk and danger to establish a reign of freedom and a rule of justice.I am mindful that only yesterday in Birmingham, Alabama, our children, crying out for brotherhood, were answered with fire hoses, snarling dogs and even death. I am mindful that only yesterday in Philadelphia, Mississippi, young people seeking to secure the right to vote were brutalized and murdered. And only yesterday more than 40 houses of worship in the State of Mississippi alone were bombed or burned because they offered a sanctuary to those who would not accept segregation.

I am mindful that debilitating and grinding poverty afflicts my people and chains them to the lowest rung of the economic ladder..

Therefore, I must ask why this prize is awarded to a movement which is beleaguered and committed to unrelenting struggle; to a movement which has not won the very peace and brotherhood which is the essence of the Nobel Prize.

After contemplation, I conclude that this award which I receive on behalf of that movement is a profound recognition that nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral question of our time - the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression. 

Civilization and violence are antithetical concepts. Negroes of the United States, following the people of India, have demonstrated that nonviolence is not sterile passivity, but a powerful moral force which makes for social transformation.

Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood. 

If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation.

The foundation of such a method is Love.

국왕폐하, 왕족전하, 위원장님, 대사각하, 그리고 신사숙녀 여러분. 본인은 미국의 2천 2백만 흑인들이 오랫동안 지속돼 온 인종차별의 암흑기를 종식시키기 위해 건설적인 투쟁에 가담하고 있는 시점에 이 노벨평화상을 수상하게 되었습니다. 본인은 꿋꿋하게 앞을 향해 나아가고 있는 인권운동을 위해, 그리고 자유와 정의가 지배하는 세상을 건설하는 데 따르는 모험과 위험에 대한 당당한 경멸을 위해 이 상을 받아들입니다.

바로 얼마 전에 앨라배마 주 버밍햄에서 우리의 자녀들의 형제애를 부르짖다가 소방차의 물대포를 맞았고, 으르렁 거리는 개에게 위협을 받았고, 심지어 죽음까지 당했다는 사실을 저는 잊지 않고 있습니다. 바로 얼마 전에 필라델피아와 미시시피주에서는 투표권을 획득하고자 애쓰던 젊은이들이 잔혹한 일을 당하고 또 살해 당하기도 했다는 사실을 저는 잊지 않고 있습니다. 그리고 바로 얼마전에 인종차별주의를 인정하지 않으려는 사람들에게 은신처를 제공하였다는 이유로 미시시피 주에서만도 40개가 넘는 교회가 폭탄 공격을 받거나 방화의 피해를 입었습니다.

고단하고 고달픈 가난은 저의 동족들을 괴롭히고 그들을 가장 낮은 경제적 위치에 묶어놓고 있다는 사실을 저는 잊지않고 있습니다.

따라서, 저로서는 왜 이상을 사방에서 포위공격을 받으며 가차없는 투쟁에 전념하고 있는 운동, 노벨상의 근본이념인 평화와 인류동포주의를 달성하지 못한 이 운동에 수여하는지 그 이유를 물어야만 합니다.

오랜 생각 끝에, 저는 그 운동을 대신하여 제가 받는 이 상이 다음과 같은 사실에 대한 의미심장한 인정이라고 결론지었습니다. 그것은 비폭력이 우리 시대의 중요한 정치적, 도덕적 문제에 대한 해답이자, 폭력과 억압에 의존하지 않고 폭력과 억압을 극복하기 위해 인간이 필요로 하는 그것이라는 사실입니다. 문명과 폭력은 정반대의 개념입니다. 미국의 흑인들은 인도 국민들의 선례를 따르며 비폭력은 결코 아무 결과도 이끌어내지 못하는 무저항이 아니라, 사회적 변화를 이끌어 내는 강력한 도덕적 힘이라는 사실을 증명하고 있습니다.

조만간 세계의 모든 사람들은 함께 평화 속에 살기 위한 방법을 발견해야만 할 것이며, 해결되지 않은 이 심각한 비가를 그것으로써 형제애의 건설적인 찬가로 변화시켜야만 할 것 입니다. 이러한 일들이 실현되려면 인간은 인류의 모든 갈등을 해결하기 위해 복수, 공격, 보복을 거부하는 방법을 찾아내야만 합니다. 그러한 방법의 초석은 바로 사랑입니다.
